Indices Multispectral Water

Water Indices

This service provides 3 water indices as images for your specified region of interest.

Water indices provide metrics about vegetation properties. Given a region of interest, the algorithm is run using Sentinel-2 to return the indices from the start date to the optional end date. The indices produced are:

  • Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI),
  • Normalized Difference Mud Index (NDMI) and
  • WorldView Water Index (WWI).
The imagery is output as a series of GeoTIFF files, each with a single band representing the calculated indices. Pixel values are typically on a normalised scale (-1 to 1), although a small number of indices have different potential ranges of values. All GeoTIFF files are provided at native resolution of the inputs.

Monitoring the occurrence and volume of methane leaks

Reducing methane emissions is imperative in the fight against climate change. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with around 80 times more warming capacity than carbon dioxide, meaning that a large reduction in emissions would result in a significant step towards climate goals and a liveable future. D-CAT has developed algorithms using existing remote sensing sources to detect methane emissions, map plumes and estimate emission volumes across the globe.

Detecting frost damage in crops

Frost can be a huge problem for farmers, causing irreversible damage to their crops and significantly reducing the amount of yield that is produced. Although aids such as weather reports can give an indication of when local regions are likely to experience frost, they are not able to tell if and where the crops have been damaged. This is vital as farmers need to know exactly which areas to treat as soon as possible to reduce the impact of frost. This is where remote sensing comes in, which can highlight regions on the farm that crops are most likely to be damaged.
