Agriculture Crop Classification

UK Nine Crop Classification

Classifies crops in a given UK region of interest, including corn, potato, rapeseed, spring barley, spring oats, spring wheat, winter barley, winter wheat as well as grassland, other and soil.

This service detects crops using Sentinel-2 images and spectral indices for the area from the start date to the optional end date. The output is provided as a GeoTIFF classifying corn(0), grassland(1), potato(2), rapeseed(3), spring barley(4), spring oats(5), spring wheat(7), winter barley(8), winter wheat(9), other(10), soil(11). A GeoTIFF is also provided which has a band for each crop specifying the probability of detection. An annotated shapefile is provided that includes for each paddock: the paddock area, majority crop, and its area. A CSV with the details is also provideded. A preview image is also provided.

D-CAT’s CEO, Phil McLachlan was privileged to join an expert panel at COP 28 alongside the First Minister of Scotland, Humza Yousaf. The panel's challenge was to discuss 'Space as a Route to Net Zero'. The discussion highlighted the pace of growth of the Scottish space industry and its 'connectedness', including that with the Scottish Finance Industry, as well as the sector's growing international reputation in providing critical climate insights from satellite data.

Frost Damage Detection

Detecting frost damage in crops

Frost can be a huge problem for farmers, causing irreversible damage to their crops and significantly reducing the amount of yield that is produced. Although aids such as weather reports can give an indication of when local regions are likely to experience frost, they are not able to tell if and where the crops have been damaged. This is vital as farmers need to know exactly which areas to treat as soon as possible to reduce the impact of frost. This is where remote sensing comes in, which can highlight regions on the farm that crops are most likely to be damaged.
